In the late 1970s and
early 1980s, the disco music scene was volatile. Fans and musicians of the rock
and punk genre began an anti-disco movement, aiming to eliminate the genre from
music. The group Earth, Wind, and Fire which specialized in disco, pop, and
funk took a big risk by releasing “Let’s Groove” in their 1981 album Raise!. The song features a variety of
instruments that weave together a catchy funk-filled tune. A synthesizer backs other sounds, its deep tone providing a contrast between the higher pitch vocals.
Percussion and electric guitar bring out the groovy element of the song, while
the trumpet flares add a nice instrumental punch that makes you want to groove.
Whenever I hear the song I just want to get up and dance. It makes me wish that
discos were still thriving because this song would bring me out every night. At
the time, “Let’s Groove” was received with mixed feelings due to the hostility
for being a disco song. But even then the song peaked at number three in the US
and the UK, also spending eight weeks on the Hot Soul Singles chart during the
end of 1981 into 1982. “Let’s Groove” was nominated for a Grammy for Best
R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group in 1982. The song also sold over
one million copies in the US, making it certified gold by the RIAA and also
certified silver in the UK by the British Phonographic Industry. If you ever
want a song to dance to whether you’re alone in your room or having fun with friends,
let’s groove.
