What I’m going to be talking about is the nature here on
Stockton’s campus. I know for me personally it was a huge factor when I decided
to attend this school.
Having a lake literally in the middle of the campus is an
extremely unique feature, and probably the reason why Satkamp calls us
“distinctive”. In all seriousness it really is a beautiful feature I wish I
visited more when I was a freshman.
Being a sophomore now, I live down in G-Court which is
extremely close to dark path and the rest of the trails through the woods and
by the intramural fields. Several times just walking down dark path I’ve
encountered turtles, a snake, and I recently saw an Osprey flying over the lake
for the first time. Any person, nature-loving or not, can appreciate this small
experiences.
Branching out from dark path are series of trails spanning
through the woods. These trails are great for a quiet stroll or for a
challenging run up inclines and through weaving paths. At first the trails may
seem a little intimidating, and I’m sure getting lost in the woods is a serious
concern for some students.
The trails intersect multiple times and some just stop
suddenly, but it is always easy to find your way back to a road or a main trail
by walking in any one direction. In my time running these trails I never
encountered any dangerous wildlife that may be a concern, except for one pesky
bug – chiggers.
Some residents may be familiar with this bug, but me being
from North Jersey I never even heard of the things. They’re basically very
small bugs, invisible to the naked eye, that bite and cause itching. Early last
semester I got them from running through the trails but I just went to the
Wellness Center in West Quad and they gave me an ice pack and some itch cream.
In a couple of weeks they were all gone and there were no problems, so don’t
let that small threat deter you.
I know many other students chose this school because of its
location, and it’s definitely a cool feature here. Once the weather gets nicer,
I encourage all students to take a walk through the trails or at least down
dark path. You never know what you could find.
